President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Ban Ki-moonIndonesia is considered worthy to be a world's role model in the disaster risk reduction program. Under the leadership of President DR. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and after the tsunami that occurred in 2004, Indonesia has implemented assessed disaster risk reduction efforts significantly. The award was actually given at the 3rd Session Global Platform DRR, May 2011, in Geneva. But because the President was unable to attend, then a Letter of Recommendation was submitted by the Special Representative of Secretary General to the Head of BNPB, as special envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to accept the letter of the statement.
On this day, November 19, 2011, in a series of activities of the ASEAN Summit Meeting, the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, handed the trophy of Global Champion for DRR to the President of the Republic of Indonesia directly, in Nusa Dua, Bali. The President was accompanied by all the Coordinating Ministers and Head of BNPB.
In his speech, the UN Secretary-General expressed his appreciation to the achievement of Indonesia. Not many countries in the world that have laws that specifically deal with disasters. Indonesia has Law No.24 of 2007 on Disaster Management. All provinces and most districts/cities have been formed the BPBD. Disaster risk reduction is one of the priorities of national medium term development plan. The regions affected have been more easily accessible.
The Government continues to support the advancement of disaster management at the local level, including by making risk maps for use in preparing development plans to institutional strengthening, through the preparation of contingency plans and training for emergency response preparedness. (ms)
