Black Onyx was first created in 4000 years ago during the Indus Valley Civilization (Harappan Culture). Someone can even create their black onyx by dipping the Agate into honey and sugar water over low heat for several days.

The pores will absorb the liquids and sugar, the caramel will looked dark brown when its heated. If the stones are then dipped into the sulfuric acid to carbonizing sugar, the onyx will looked black.

This method applied for a long time and produce permanent results. Most of black Agate stones commercially produced by heated and permanently dyed to enhance the depth of black color and make it exotic.

Black Onyx is very easy to be scratched if not handled carefully though it's easy to clean the stone by commercial jewelry polish. After polishing, the sections should be rinsed with hot water and dried with a soft cloth.

A drop of olive oil can produce a beautiful light of the stone. Rinse water can also clean the dirt but do not soak the stone because it can diminish the dip. Avoid putting two stones in one place, to avoid friction. It is good to avoid heat, light, or excessive chemicals to prolong the durability of stone.
